Burning to DVD in Win XP
I'm not looking for a bargain, because I need a big hard drive and the ability to edit video and photos and burn DVDs. do know someone who has been programming one for industrial use, but every time he starts to talk about it he goes off into some strange programming language that loses me in about 20 seconds.

If you have a problem, try another brand of media just in case. Check if there is firmware updates for your drive.

Its really strange that you are unable to burn audio CDs but can burn DVDs. Are you sure that you can burn data CDs? You might verify that there is not a problem burning CDs either due to a drive problem or a bad batch of CDs. Note that the Imation CDs may very well be from a manufacturer like CMC.

1)authoring from DVD to MPEG2 (svcd) could be cause you are using Constant Bit Rate and the data level cannot support the level coming off and starts to lose bandwidth. or not enough key frames and therfore image gets worse as fils goes on. Audio drifting problem.
For some strange reason it is not shown in the WalMart online search engine but is available in their stores. I am sure that I will be happy with it It comes with a capture program that works with it flawlessly and also comes with Ulead's Video Studio 9SE which is just as powerful as MM and will also burn DVDs.

(this hasnt happend under previous kernels, but I cant swear as to the last one I burned a dvd under.) I too had a strange thing happen when I just tried to burn a dvd with growisofs. First, it didnt work as non-root. (failed with unable to set MODE, no dmesg) So, I became root, and it burnt all right.

a strange DVD burner problem
I've recently installed a NEC ND-1000A DVD+R/RW drive and it will burn DVDs OK, but won't read them back for some reason. I thought the first 2 were coasters until I put the 2nd one in another machine and it read it OK. I burn the first with InstantCD/DVD v6.5 and the second with Nero 5.5.10.x and both seemed to
